𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐂𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧! Portland and Pacific Northwest friends: I hope you’ll join me for a very special evening of photography, storytelling, history, music and dance honoring Portland's performance culture "𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐞𝐬" and the forthcoming book 𝐒𝐮𝐛𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐚 & 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐮𝐥𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐀𝐩𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐞; 50 portraits and 13 interviews.
This project grew out of my fascination with the 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐚 and the tension and balance between our creative muses as artists and the practicalities of paying the rent and feeding our families. The book is a portrait of a city known for its creative, rebellious and iconoclastic spirit.
The subjects of these collaborative photographs and interviews will be at 𝐑𝐚𝐞 𝐋𝐨𝐟𝐭 (𝟐𝟐𝟐𝟐 𝐍𝐄 𝐎𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐨𝐧 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐭) on 𝐎𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝟗, 𝟔–𝟏𝟎 𝐏𝐌, to tell their stories, perform and show their inner selves in full regalia. We’ll have bubbly, wine, food, music, dance, photography and plenty of visual spectacle, along with local vendors representing the products, businesses and services that make Portland so inventive and independent.
We’ll also be joined by a historian who will explore the history of performance in Portland and the Pacific Northwest — including the cultural forces that helped give Portland its reputation for having the most strip clubs per capita and being known as the whitest city in America — connecting the artists and communities represented in Subrosa to the broader history of performance, vice, nightlife and creative expression in the region.
This is a celebration of and 𝐠𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐬 who gave their time and stories to make the project possible, and of the remarkable creative community that helped bring the project and book to life.
